Locum consultant – breast & oncoplastic surgeon

 

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the successful Breast Unit at the University Hospitals Southampton, as a Locum Consultant Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon based at the Princess Anne Hospital, Southampton. This is a fixed term six-month locum post to cover service provision whilst a definitive additional substantive post is finalised, with a particular focus on maintaining capacity to deliver national cancer targets and Oncoplastic services. The successful candidate will join an existing team of six breast surgeons, six breast care nurses, two advanced nurse practitioners, seven breast radiologists, six breast histopathologists and eight breast oncologists.

About The Team

The Breast Service at Southampton provides local services for the people of Southampton and much of Hampshire receiving over 6000 new symptomatic referrals and treating over 600 breast cancers. The Breast Screening unit provides services for Southampton Salisbury the Isle of Wight and parts of Dorset screening over 37000 women each year. In addition to two week wait clinics, specialist clinics with the unit include breast screening recall clinics, combined oncological clinics, oncoplastic clinics held jointly with the Salisbury plastic surgical team, and Family History clinics with a quarterly regional joint genetics MDT. Recent developments include the introduction of percutaneous vacuum excision, MRI guided biopsy and the appointment and development of an advanced breast nurse practitioners (ANP) team and a clinical fellow. Southampton is a Regional Clinical Genetics Centre and a Cancer Research UK Clinical Research Centre. The Southampton breast unit has a strong track record of actively recruiting to many breast surgical and oncological clinical trials and is supported by a team of clinical trials practitioners. The Southampton Oncology Centre provides comprehensive regional cancer services and provides a high degree of specialisation with multidisciplinary clinics for all the major cancers.

What You’ll Do

The requirement for the service is that we have in place a sustainable, reliable and high quality service meeting and exceeding national standards. There is no commitment to the General Surgery on-call rota.

What We’re Looking For

The successful candidate will be expected to deliver clinical excellence within the speciality of Breast Surgery and should demonstrate significant experience in diagnosis and screening, and breast cancer and Oncoplastic surgery. A willingness to learn and work within a constantly changing environment is necessary, together with adaptability to clinical and service requirements.

Additional Information

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.
