Southampton Eye Unit is a tertiary referral centre for corneal disease and ocular surface pathology. This position offers the candidate exposure to a wide range of complex corneal pathology and the successful applicant will be expected to participate fully in clinical research. The candidate will be performing high volume cataract and corneal surgery including Endothelial Keratoplasty, DALK and PK. Southampton Eye Unit have established links with the University thus giving the opportunity to pursue corneal science research if desired.

About The Team

The Corneal service is led by 3 consultant ophthalmologists and supported by a senior fellow and trainees. The Southampton Eye Unit is a tertiary referral centre for complex corneal graft surgery, atypical corneal infection and kerataconus management. We regularly perform more than 120 corneal grafts per year and more than 100 collagen cross-linking procedures a year. We have a high number of inpatients with corneal infections managed within the eye unit and Professor Hossain is a national expert on the management of these cases.

What You’ll Do

Learn principles of corneal transplantation surgery. Assist and perform the entire range of corneal transplant

Perform regular collagen cross-linking and assist in introduction of corneal ring service

Co-manage with the responsible consultant inpatients under the corneal team with complex ocular surface pathology.

This post would be suitable for candidates who are close to completing their training and would be ideal prior to applying for a consultant position

Additional Information

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay) Basic Salary – MT04 £48,075. Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview. Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role. Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible. Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.
