Stroke Trust Grade Doctor ST3+
Specialist Registrar (Trust Grade) in Neurology / Stroke Medicine
start date in February 2021
We have a vacancy for Specialist Registrars in Neurology/Stroke Medicine at University College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. You will be based in the stroke service at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square. Our service includes the largest hyperacute stroke unit (HASU) in London and a dedicated acute stroke and brain injury unit that is located at The National Hospital for Neurology, Queen Square (NHNN). UCLH and NHNN are the most centrally located hospitals in London, within walking distance to Oxford Street, Covent Garden and Soho.
This post will allow a trainee to deepen and extend their experience of Neurology and Stroke. The post holder will have access to the educational opportunities as the other neurology SpRs with NTNs. Appraisals can be done using the “SARD” system with one of the Stroke Consultants.
There are numerous educational opportunities in the weekly timetable including the famous Gowers round, the weekly CPC, a weekly teaching seminar delivered by consultants and the monthly SpR Calman regional teaching programme which takes place on the NHNN site. There is access to a diverse programme of seminars and lectures at the ION and NHNN and specialist clinics covering the entire neurology curriculum by arrangement. UCLH employees enjoy full access to UCL library facilities. There will be many opportunities for the successful applicant to be involved in a stroke research project and participation in service audit will be expected.
In addition we have a stroke educational fund. Trust grade doctors can apply to this for all stroke educational activities, and we will fund fees, travel and accommodation costs. Attendance at the yearly UK Stroke Forum and/or the European Stroke Organisation Conference would be strongly encouraged and fully funded with a successful poster submission (subject to rota constraints). We will also pay fees for MRCP exams, on condition of a commitment to work for 6 months or more, and that the exams are taken during the employment period.
All candidates should have full registration with the GMC. MRCP or equivalent is desirable but not essential if the candidate has a good level of acute medical experience.
Previous holders of this post have successfully gone on to apply for Neurology training posts and other medical speciality training posts. European doctors already on the speciality register have also gained more experience of the UK system in this role, before successful applications to Neurology Consultant posts.
The successful applicant will participate in a 1:8 evening and night rota on the HASU at NHNN. There is also a stroke SHO and thrombolysis nurse on call at night. The post is banded 1A.
Doctors who are not UK or EEA nationals and whose immigration status entitles them to work without restriction in the UK will be considered on an equal basis with UK and EEA nationals. Other non-UK or non-EEA nationals with limited leave to remain in the UK and whose employment will require Tier 2 sponsorship are subject to the Resident Labour Market Test (RLMT).
